Fauré's Requiem: Contrast to the Requiem Genre

The Requiem composed by Gabriel Fauré, whose compositional process exceeded two decades, is unique in its use of modality, harmony, orchestration, text choice, and overall sense of tranquility. This piece is distinct from the major Requiems of the 18th and 19th centuries. A comparison of the Fauré Requiem with the Requiems of Mozart, Berlioz, Brahms, and Verdi, which were composed in 1791, 1837, 1865, and 1874 respectively, provide the Fauré Requiem with an even more distinct musical taste. Viewing the Fauré Requiem under the lens of comparative analysis we may see what choices were made in his composition that allow his piece to be so disparate from the other Requiem settings.
