A Postcolonial Feminist Analysis of Tahmima Anam's A Golden Age
Elizabeth A. Martchink
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

In my postcolonial feminist analysis of Tahmima Anam's debut novel A Golden Age, I will be taking an in-depth look at the main character, Rehana. Against the backdrop of the Bangladeshi War of Independence, Rehana struggles to find her own sense of identity. The war and the difficult decisions that the war forces Rehana to make act as a catalyst for her to gradually break free from the constraints of her role as a mother and widow. Rehana emerges from the war not only with an identity of her own, but also with her family intact and closer than ever.
