Ideas of human rights and universal equality have been brought to the forefront of global debates in the past several decades. For South Africans, these debates are present in the daily struggle to make equal opportunity a reality within an ethnically diverse homeland. Following the end of apartheid and the continued struggle for reconciliation, the fight for equality continues to be influenced by a variety of cultures, ideologies, and social backgrounds, and will endure far into the future. In this paper, I examine the definition of human rights in a South African context, explore the past challenges of its implementation, and identify the key players and issues in the current struggle for equality.
