Anesthesia Use in Childbirth as Presented in 19th Century Medical Resource Books
Salina A. Bush
Dr. Kathryn Brammall, Faculty Mentor
Chloroform was discovered in 1831 and was used during for first time in delivery in 1847. This paper will look at the attitudes and controversies that surrounded anesthesia use during childbirth. The paper will focus on the 19th century and mostly on the time after 1847 because this was when chloroform started to be more widely used. The reason that I limited it to the 19th century is because it is focused on the reactions of when anesthesia was relatively new in use. It will focus on how anesthesia was viewed and presented in instruction manuals and resource book aimed to be used by women. These are books that were written by a professional, or at least attributed to a professional, for the use of women. They would provide instruction on many aspects of life and child care for what seems to be middle class women.
