Stevie Ray Vaughan is an important figure in the later history of American blues music. Emerging from the Dallas-Austin blues scene in the 1980's, his energetic guitar-dominated approach significantly extended the reach of the blues, especially among young listeners more accustomed to rock and roll. This paper considers Stevie Ray Vaughan's place in the blues tradition by examining those musicians who influenced the development of his style and also by accounting for his impact upon those who followed. Particular attention will be paid to his treatment of material and techniques associated with Jimi Hendrix.
