Relationship Between Backward Overhead Medicine Ball Throw and Power Measured from Two Lifting Methods

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the backward overhead medicine ball (BOMB) throw, Smith-machine pull, and snatch. Male, Olympic-style weightlifters (n = 6) performed a snatch, a Smith-machine pull, and the BOMB throw on separate days. The snatch and Smith-machine pull were performed twice, each time measuring velocity with a V-scope that was attached to the bar. The snatch and Smith-machine pull were performed using a load equivalent to 80% of the lifters best competitive snatch lift. Their max snatch was recorded from previous competitions and 80% of it was taken and used in in this study.. The Smith-machine pull and the snatch showed strong correlations to the BOMB throw, with the snatch having a higher percent of the variance accounted for. The BOMB throw appears to be a simple, convenient method for assessing the explosive power of competitive weightlifters.
