"What You Want Destroys What You Need": A Marxist Criticism of Vance Moore's Odyssey
James W. Mellish
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
In Vance Moore's Odyssey (2001), Moore showcases the effects that a near-apocalypse has on a population and economy. Moore notes which markets flourish and which wither, based on the newfound needs and wants of the people. After surviving widespread disaster, citizens look for guidance everywhere but within, and Moore shows how the largest sources of influence, whether inherently good or evil, in society all attempt to gain control of the continent. Moore exposes the fickleness of the human spirit when faced with great adversity, and how people trust anyone when they think they have nothing to lose, only to find out how wrong they were to believe so.
