Safe Brake: Driving Safety Program for At-Risk Teens

Description of Project: At-risk youth living in a juvenile detention center and a drug treatment center participated in this safe driving program at their respective facilities. This program included a presentation about safe driving from a highway patrol officer using a car crash simulator and a presentation from Think-First-Missouri about brain injures resulting from car crashes. Objectives: -Provide a safe driving program to at-risk youth during the school year. -Upon completion, participants will intend to make safe driving choices to prevent tragic crashes. Discussion of objectives met: Two Safe Brake programs were presented during spring 2010. The majority (27/28, 96.4%) of participants intend to make safe driving choices in the future. Implications: Gammans will continue to educate at-risk populations like young drivers on unhealthy behaviors. Safe driving programs may still be in need. Conclusions: Most participants, when asked their future driving behavioral intentions reported aim of safer driving habits.
