East Meets West: The Influence of Japanese Woodblock Prints on French Art in the 19th Century
Ryan S. Campbell
Dr. Patrick Lecaque, Faculty Mentor
While Impressionist and Post Impressionist art remains some of the most popular in the world, few are aware that the European masters who created it were profoundly influenced by Japanese artwork, particularly woodblock prints. Artists as diverse as Braquemond, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec all shared a common admiration and inspiration from Japanese art from the Edo and Meiji periods. This presentation will trace the spread of Japanese artwork into France, examine how the artwork influenced Impressionist artists, and discuss the technical differences between the two styles.
