Hookah Smoking Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors

A review of literature was conducted to obtain information regarding the practice, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of hookah smoking. A hookah is used for smoking tobacco. The smoke is cooled and filtered by passing through water. Data from Truman students completing the 2009 Missouri College Health Behavior Survey indicated a usage rate higher than cigarette use (10.7% vs. 7.9%). Overall, the literature indicated that hookah smoking is detrimental to health; it increases the risk of lung cancer and other diseases associated with cigarette smoking. A number of specific findings will be presented in this poster. Hookah smoking is growing in popularity in the U.S., especially among young adults; this is particularly problematic because it is widely perceived as a safe alternative to other tobacco products. Therefore, on the basis of this literature review, the researchers have developed a survey and plan to implement an educational intervention about hookah.
