Bystander Intervention: A Call to Action
Charles C. Sexton
Dr. Roberta Donahue, Faculty Mentor
A problem on many college campuses is students drinking to the point of alcohol poisoning and bystanders failing to act due to fear of getting in trouble or thinking that someone else is going to take the initiative. At Truman, 90% of the students surveyed said they would do something if they suspected someone had alcohol poisoning. However, answering a survey question is much different than being in a real-life situation and there have been incidences reported of people not intervening when necessary. The purpose of this presentation is to educate students on how to intervene if they are put in such a situation. I will also discuss successful educational interventions that have worked at other colleges and how we could implement such a program at Truman.
