William S. Burroughs: La máquina de escribir
Antonio Bonome
Prof. John Bohac , Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this paper is informing the public about interdisciplinarity as expressed in the work of William S. Burroughs, a writer who painted, a movie maker who wrote and worked with audio. What he learned in one discipline, he applied to another by embedding in his art the analysis of his own creative process. This creative process started with inserting his narrative in letters to friends, and developed over his life into an extensive use of visual collage, scrapbook production, and his cut-up technique, where samples of his writing came from a vast array of contexts. These visual collages were further subjected to cuts, folds, and rearrangements to be later spliced in or passed through a matrix that juxtaposed different writings. The resulting aleatory situations and characters could in turn be materialized into photographic or sound collages, or rearranged/juxtaposed with new material and turned again into his unmistakable writing.
