Impacts of Individual Choice in Gifted Literature Groups

Gifted learners often become frustrated and bored in school because the work moves too slowly. The purpose of this action research study is to examine a method for meeting the academic needs of gifted learners. The research addresses the question What happens when gifted students choose their own pacing in reading? by measuring student attitudes towards reading; academic achievement; and the researcher's development as a teacher before and after participating in a self-paced reading unit. Data was collected from six gifted third-grade students. Aggregate data from a pre-unit and post-unit survey were compared. After the unit, fewer students reported feeling bored in reading and more students reported they like the books read in school and like to read choice and school-books at home. An increased number of students strongly agree that they know strategies to help them understand what they read and that they learn from reading.
