Background, Analysis, and Performance of Kokopeli
Millicent M. Keane
Dr. Julianna Moore, Faculty Mentor
Although she is well known for her chamber and orchestral works, Katherine Hoover, a flutist and composer, also wrote selections for solo flute, including Kokopeli in 1990. There are many flute player images depicted in rock art throughout the Southwest region of the United States, including that of Kokopeli, who was believed to have the power to bring rain and well-being, and, according to some natives of the Hopi tribe, he was the god of human fertility. This piece uses varying dynamics and rhythms, flourishes, freedom in the length of notes, and other devices to portray the style of a Native American flute performance and to emulate the flute players from their legends who enchanted others with their music. I will give a short presentation discussing the historical background of the Native American legends that inspired Hoover, and her compositional devices in Kokopeli, followed by a performance of the piece.
