Macronutrient Analysis of Collegiate Track Sprinters

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of selected anthropometric dimensions to predict 1-RM bench press. A sample of untrained college men (n = 144) were measured for selected anthropometric dimensions. Multiple regression analysis selected flexed arm circumference and triceps skinfold to predict 1-RM bench press (R = 0.76, SEE = 29.5 lbs). This prediction equation accurately estimated 1-RM bench press (ICC = 0.87, t = 0.69) in an untrained cross-validation sample (n = 49). Following 12 weeks of resistance training, the prediction equation significantly underestimated actual 1-RM bench press despite a moderately high correlation between predicted and actual 1-RM (ICC = 0.79). The percent change in bench press (14.8 13.8%) was significantly greater than the change in arm circumference (1.2 7.2%) or triceps skinfold (-2.8 17.1%). Changes in simple anthropometric dimensions may not adequately represented muscle strength changes following resistance training.
