Intrapopulation Genetic Diversity Among Individuals From Two Different New Mexican Open-Pollinated Landraces

The Angustifolia-like (AN) gene encodes a protein that is involved in the arrangement of cortical microtubules in epidermal and mesophyll cells in plants. Thus, this protein helps to determine the shape of the leaf. In a previous study, the DNA sequence diversity of the maize AN gene was determined for 7 North American inbred lines and 5 New Mexican open-pollinated landraces. Interestingly, the New Mexican open-pollinated land races exhibited less diversity than the inbred lines studied. To better assess the degree of DNA sequence diversity at the AN locus the diversity among individuals from two different New Mexican open pollinated landraces was determined. Silent pi calculations confirmed that the Pueblo lines exhibit very little DNA sequence diversity.
