Politeness in Sartre's Huis clos: scene V
Daniel D. Coate♦
Dr. Sally Cook, Faculty Mentor
This paper is an exploration of the final scene of Jean-Paul Sartre's Huis clos as a micro-example for politeness strategies used in the real world. The interactions between Sartre's characters serve as a compressed model of human relationships, with his characters negotiating their status and social distance through various politeness strategies as their relationships develop and change, with politeness "breaking down" as they grow closer and more comfortable with each other.
