Heinrich Schliemann: Psychopathic Megalomaniac or Eccentric Genius? Heinrich Schliemann is known as the father of archaeology. However, in the last twenty years some scholars have questioned the methods Schliemann used when discovering Troy and Mycenae. In fact, some scholars claim that Schliemann had problems with pathological lying and possessed many symptoms of psychopathia. The attempt of this essay is not to argue for or against the archaeological morality of Schliemann but rather to give both sides of the argument. Therefore this essay looked at the scholarship on Schliemann, but attempted to avoid the use of his autobiography and subsequent biographies—since they were all based on his autobiography. The intended conclusion would be an unbiased review of the literature surrounding Heinrich Schliemann.
