Families' Effects on Students
Many elementary aged students face problems at home that affect their life at school. This project will examine families' effects on their child’s academic performance, behavior, and social interactions while at school through a review of already published literature. There have been many studies published discussing different factors that affect a child’s performance at school. These factors include differences in parenting styles, parental involvement and attitude towards school, previous education and socioeconomic status of parents, and whether or not they have a history of mental health issues. After examining published studies, trends are showing decreases in academic performance and increases in behavior issues in students when the mentioned factors are present in the child’s family. Knowing how family factors can affect students' performance at school can be very helpful in aiding student success. If schools and teachers know what is affecting students, they can work with families to make changes.
