Bilingual Stroop Test with Pseudohomophones
This study examines Spanish-English bilinguals’ performance on adapted Stroop tests. A Stroop test requires participants to name the font color of a word while ignoring what the word says. Participants completed two types of Stroop tests, one in which the stimulus language and response language match (same language), and one in which they did not (mixed language). In each, the Stroop test employed both color words (BLUE) and color word pseudohomophones (BLOO), in congruent (BLUE/BLOO written in blue) and incongruent (BLUE/BLOO written in red) trials. The study addresses the conflicting results of whether bilinguals perform better on same or mixed language tests, and is the first to explore the effect of pseudohomophones on bilinguals' Stroop reaction times.
