A Selected Scene from Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel

Angel C. Lee
Prof. Brad M. Carlson, Faculty Mentor

In the Fall semester of this year, I directed the play Dry Land for the Truman State University Department of Theatre.

Dry Land tells the story of Amy and Ester, two high school girls on the same swim team. They form a friendship out of necessity when Amy discovers that she is pregnant and reaches out to Ester for help. I chose to direct this play because of how honest and raw the story is, and the genuine nature of the relationships within.

In the chosen scene, Ester has arrived at the girls’ locker room, after going to the store to get laundry detergent. Amy read online that drinking detergent could induce an at home abortion, but decides against doing this. Throughout the scene, the two girls talk about a variety of topics, including porn and sex, why Ester moved from Tampa, and what Amy is going to do.
