Financial Literacy Among College Students

Anne E. Hubble
Dr. Michael V. Barnes, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study is to analyze financial literacy among college students, with the goal to determine whether these students benefit from personal financial literacy courses in high school.  We measured financial literacy using the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) financial literacy quiz. After controlling for factors such as college major and grade level, we do not find a significant correlation between the quiz results and the experience of taking a personal financial literacy class in high school.  These results may suggest that high school personal financial literacy courses, while well-intentioned, do not achieve their overall objective of improving personal financial literacy.
