Women's Roles in the Algerian War

At the start of the Age of Imperialism, France was a major world player in the colonization of regions of the world outside of Europe. Once the world was divided amongst the powers of Europe a new battle began; keeping the native population under control and more importantly compliant with the new government. While France claimed that it brought “civilization” to the  “heathen” population of its colonies through religion and control of the government, the indigenous population was subject to abuse and exploitation. 

This paper will explore the ways in which native populations of French colonies organized and successfully fought for their freedom. More importantly, it will chronicle the female contributions to the fight for the independence of the Algerian people. This study will seek to show the importance of women in the fight for independence while also covering the position of women in society before and after the Algerian war as well as critiquing the colonial system that led to the oppression of women.
