26th Annual Student Research Conference

John Wesley: Musical Influences and Application
Jessica R. Mitchell
Dr. Warren Gooch and Dr. Mark Appold, Faculty Mentors

John Wesley was one of the co-founders of the Methodist movement and also a composer of hymns. As Wesley developed the theology that would be known as Methodism, he was influenced by Anglican, Arminian, and Moravian doctrines. These belief systems also strongly impacted Wesley's views on music and the role it should play within the church. To date, most research on John Wesley has focused on his life and theology. While this session of the conference draws upon the research of such prior work, it will focus more directly on the intersection of Wesley's theology and the music that he composed. Topics explored include Wesley's choice of musical subject matter, liturgical significance, and musical placement within the worship setting.
