Celtic Studies Minor
Olivia M. Wikle
Dr. Patricia Gately, Faculty Mentor

Truman State University's Celtic Studies minor has been a great opportunity for me in that it has allowed for a truly interdisciplinary study of a culture rich in history and folklore. A combination of independent research, international study, and review of Celtic literature has resulted in a deeper understanding of an array of aspects of Celtic culture. Topics covered in pursuit of the minor have included studies in Celtic music, language, folklore, and history. In particular, an analysis of Scottish and American supernatural balladry completed during two semesters of undergraduate independent study at Truman exemplifies an excellent synthesis of the aforementioned aspects of Celtic culture. This ballad study illuminates the importance of understanding the transmission and transformation of the many facets of a culture so prolific that it has recurrently captured the imaginations of people all over the world.
