The Characterization of Several Different Functional Groups on Porphyrin, N-Confused Porphyrin, and Doubly N-Confused Porphyrin

Our research involves the design, synthesis, and physical characterization of a wide range of porphyrin complex molecules. Because certain types of reagents needed for our porphyrin synthesis are hydrolyzed in ambient condition, we have integrated an Inert Atmosphere Glove Box, which has allowed us to work with such air/moisture sensitive reagents that serve as an essential part in the step by step syntheses of customized dipyrromethanes containing large functional groups, a precursor to porphyrin synthesis. These specific dipyrromethanes allow us the flexibility to synthesis normal and N-confused porphyrins. These porphyrins have the potential to be building blocks for new material synthesis. Our goal is to take what we know about regular metalloporphyrins and add a completely new dimension by rotating any one of the four central nitrogen atoms. The synthesized compound will be characterized NMR, IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and possibly X-ray crystallography.
