Upward Bound’s Impact On Rural School Districts: Teacher’s Perspectives

Brooke Dustman
Dr. Hyun-Joo Kim, Faculty Mentor

Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparatory program in the United States. It is one of the few programs that low income and first generation college students in rural Missouri have access to. Due to its federal funding, plenty of internal research is done to assess participating students progress both socially and academically. How beneficial do high school teachers find the program though? In order to find this information, I surveyed forty rural school districts served by five different Upward Bound programs across the state of Missouri. Given this, I was better able to gauge the opinions teachers have of the overall benefit and services provided by Upward Bound. Additionally, this study allowed me to compare differences between regional programs.
