The Influence of Buddy Reading Systems on Student Comprehension and Attitude in a Second Grade Classroom

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of various buddy pairings on student comprehension and attitude toward reading. Former educational research shows buddy reading increases confidence of below level students (Friedland, 2006). However, little research has been conducted to compare different buddy reading systems for below, on, and advanced level students. A second grade classroom (N= 19) participated in a four week study comparing four types of buddy reading. Each student completed comprehension questions and satisfaction surveys after each buddy reading session. The qualitative and quantitative results showed a relationship between different buddy reading pairings and students’ comprehension. A relationship also existed between students’ attitudes toward buddy reading and their respective reading levels.
