The Evolution of Jazz Trumpet
Jonathan M. Vieker
Prof. Tim AuBuchon, Faculty Mentor

The idiom of jazz has evolved tremendously in its relatively short lifetime, and at or near the forefront of each of its stages have been trumpet players. This presentation, which will consist of an oral presentation and a short musical demonstration, will briefly explore the lives and stylistic characteristics of eight of the most historically important and influential jazz trumpet players. Transcriptions of a characteristic solo from each will be briefly analyzed (one will be performed), and their contributions to the concepts of jazz and jazz trumpet will be discussed.
