Avant de disparaître: Translation and Alalysis

Nicholas A. Reznick
Dr. Ronald Manning, Faculty Mentor

Kaplan is a man with a shrouded past, slowly losing himself in a world overrun by once-human creatures known as the infected. Years after these zombie-like creatures storm the world, Kaplan finds himself alone in a much diminished Paris after his wife Hélène leaves him. Now unmoored from what little stability he had in his post-apocalyptic life, he searches for her as everything falls apart around him.

My capstone project is to translate this work into English for the first time, bringing author Xabi Molia’s work to a new audience without sacrificing any of the acerbic wit or relevant social commentary that makes his work notable in the first place. During my presentation I will present a portion of the translated text, alongside an analysis of how Molia combines refined literature with action movie style to make works greater than the sum of their parts.
