Ability Grouping in the Elementary Classroom

Jacquelyn O. Wheeler♦
Dr. Christopher Maglio, Faculty Mentor

Grouping together children of perceived similar abilities has been and continues to be common practice across a wide range of educational settings both in the United States and abroad. Predominantly utilized at the elementary level, ability grouping is both an educational and a management practice employed by teachers in an attempt to create the most effective learning environment for all students. This study will discuss the observed impact of ability grouping on student engagement, or willingness to participate in and add to classroom discussion, and student achievement, or graded outcomes, when implemented in a 4th grade classroom.
