Relationship of Skinfold Measurements to DXA Percent Fat in College Women Athletes

Skinfold (SKF) measurements have been a widely accepted technique for estimating %fat in women. Most of the previous equations were developed using densitometry as the criterion measure of %fat. Few prediction equations exist using SKF to estimate %fat from dual-energy
X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of selected SKF prediction equations to estimate DXA %fat in women athletes. College athletes (n = 57) from 3 sports were measured for %fat and multiple SKF. Four athletic SKF prediction equations significantly underestimate %fat by 1.8% to 10.3%. A new 6-SKF equation was developed (r = 0.87, SEE = 2.6%). Cross-validation on women athletes from different sports (n = 23) showed good agreement (r = 0.89, SEE = 2.5%) and no significant difference between predicted and actual %fat. The new equation appears to be more accurate than previous equations developed using other criterion techniques.
