Determination Of Optimal Fused-Silica Fibers for the ATLAS Reaction Plane Detector

Within the proposed Reaction Plane Detector for the Zero Degree Calorimeter at ATLAS, the Toroidal LHC Apparatus developed by CERN, proton-proton collisions are analyzed through the transverse shower profile of absorbed Cherenkov radiation. High radiation and fiber construction limitations reduce the efficiency of photon absorption, leading to higher maintenance costs and lower reactor uptime. To improve photon absorption, a new fused-silica fiber must be chosen for the Reaction Plane Detector which maximizes efficiency without sacrificing radiation hardness. By simulating Cherenkov radiation inside three different fibers, efficiency values can be evaluated and an optimal candidate is chosen for Run 4. The FSHA6 fiber, produced by Molex and Heuraus, was found to have the highest simulated efficiency at 5.26.
