Early Detection of COVID-19 in College Athletics: What Works?

During the 2020-2021 academic year, student-athletes at Truman State were regularly screened and tested for COVID-19. Over 16,000 data points related to symptoms and test results were collected. The goal was to use this previously collected data to determine the method most effective for early detection of the virus to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in college athletics. Screening for symptoms of COVID-19 was ineffective for preventing the spread of the virus. Many athletes experienced symptoms during the 1-year period, but chose to isolate and seek medical attention. Surveillance testing for COVID was ineffective for preventing the spread of the virus. 145 student athletes tested positive during the 1-year period. 36 tested positive during surveillance testing (1.79% positivity rate), and 109 tested positive when seeking medical attention for symptoms of COVID-19 (positivity rate unknown). False positive cases are extremely rare, and asymptomatic carriers are rare.
