Towards Proximity and Mobile Device Centric Intuitive Interaction Schemes to Control Physical Door Ways in a Smart Environment.

Colby M. Bratton
Dr. Kafi Rahman, Faculty Mentor

In this work, we aim to develop an accessibility project to assist the users with mobility disabilities to intuitively interact with door plates in a smart environment. In order to open doorways, we want to incorporate emerging computer sensory technologies and explore proximity sensor based interaction, smart voice based interaction, and mobile application based interaction techniques in this project. The techniques may reduce the physical overhead of the users by freeing them up from physically locating and interacting with door opener plates.

In this project, we plan to incorporate Alexa flex voice assistant, proximity sensor, java based mobile app development tools to implement the mentioned interaction options. For example, users of the system can initiate action by interaction with Alexa or use a Bluetooth-enabled mobile device to activate the door plate switch.  Through development, our objective is to create live demos and compare the proposed interaction techniques in this project.
