Jacquelyn M. McGoon♦
Dr. Rebecca Dierking, Faculty Mentor

Research in the education field supports the concept of building a sense of community as an essential component to creating an effective and engaging learning environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact that frequent collaboration between students has on building a strong sense of community in the classroom. All activities completed throughout this study are completed over a unit on The Great Gatsby. This study uses a qualitative case study design and typological analysis to determine student perception of collaborative activities, the sense of community present after implementing multiple collaborative activities, and student engagement with the activities. These typologies are analyzed for the impact of the activities on the overall classroom community.
