Know-Your-Health Fair

Madelyn S. Mahurin*, Esobel Moore, and Kurt Bryning
Dr. Nancy Daley-Moore, Faculty Mentor

Faced with the responsibility of their own health for the first time, college students are in desperate need of resources and materials to ease this transition from minimal responsibility to full responsibility. In order for students to be able to make informed decisions about their health, it is essential that they know their health. Health risk assessments provide opportunity to inform the population, form a baseline for future practice, and aid in preventative efforts (Unwin 2013). The purpose of the Know-Your-Health Fair, is threefold; to discover the extent of student risk for 5 health conditions, to determine how brief educational sessions will improve the participants’ confidence in their understanding of their own individual risk, and to educate students about their risk for 5 relevant health conditions; addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and insomnia. Confidence was measured in the pre/post tests using a Likert scale.
