Health Education on Mental Resilience

Mental resilience is the ability to adapt and deal with extreme stress. During the Fall 2017 semester, an IRB-approved photovoice study was conducted to investigate how participants depicted ‘mental resilience.’ Using convenience sampling methods, participants (n=16) submitted 51 photos for the study. A constant comparison method of analysis was used to deduce a central theme focused on coping strategies observed in all the photos. A public photovoice event displayed the photos and submission during the Spring 2018 semester. All attendees (n=28) completed a pre- and post-survey designed to evaluate whether they had adopted a new positive coping strategy. Fourteen participants self-reported the adoption of a new coping behavior learned from the photovoice event. The data collected from the photovoice study and gallery were used to develop, Build Resilience, a series of campus events designed to teach students methods to improve coping skills.
