Building Community Through Literature Circles

Margaret A. Stormes♦

Literature circles are often practiced at the elementary and middle school levels but aren’t often found in the high school setting. Literature circles are small groups of students that take on different roles or perspectives when working with a text to build a better collaborative experience of the text. The overarching question guiding my research was “How will  literature circles impact classroom communities?” Classroom observation of the literature circles indicated that literature circles not only improved students’ understanding of texts but also allowed for classroom community growth and showed that the circles have a place in a high school setting.
