Substance Use and Abuse in First-Generation and Continuing-Generation College Students

Grace A. Fear
Dr. Brian Altenhofen, Faculty Mentor

This study looks at the possibility of substance use and abuse within the Truman State community and attempts to determine if first-generation college students are at a higher risk of these habits. Through a quantitative study done in the fall of 2018, we have been able to determine the approximate rates of substance use and/or abuse on campus within both groups of students whose parents have a college education and those whose parents do not. This presentation will break down our method and results, discuss what that means for the University, and present possible preventative measures
