The Effects of High Amylose Maize on Broiler Chickens

As the broiler industry has become more specialized and integrated in response to the food demands of a growing world population, feed efficiency has become a critical factor in broiler production. Conventional maize is one of the primary components of broiler feed rations, and a hypothesis was developed stating that a ration containing maize with a high-amylose content could lower the mortality and improve the feed efficiency of the broilers when compared to conventional maize.

100 broiler chicks were split equally into two groups that were fed a starter ration for 5 weeks. Next, both groups were fed a finishing ration consisting of maize, soybean meal, and limestone. One treatment group received maize with regular starch content while the other group received a ration that replaced 10% of the conventional maize with high-amylose maize. Each group was weighed weekly while on the finisher ration until the conclusion of the study.
