Traduction de La Maison des Epices

Nicholas G. Vellios
Dr. Sana Camara and Dr. Betty McLane-Iles, Faculty Mentors

This is the translation of several chapters of La Maison des Epices by the Senegalese writer Nafissatou Dia Diouf. These chapters are a highlight of the major events and some of the philosophical, historical and medical issues from the novel. It is the story of a Senegalese doctor and his relationship with one of his patients, a young amnesiac in an asylum constructed in the remains of an old slave trading outpost known euphemistically as “the Spice House.” The book is written in the style of a novel; however, it has a rich and erudite vocabulary with many philosophical, historical, and scientific undertones. In translating, care has been taken to remain as faithful as possible to the original writing style in an attempt to retain the original tone and feeling that is so characteristic of the novel. A brief explanation and analysis is also present to accompany the translated passages.
