Looking at Undocumented Immigrants Through the Lens of Science Fiction Film District 9

Kiden Pitia
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

This paper will draw on the plot of the award-winning film District 9 to illustrate the current political and social construct of immigrants in the United States. The present moment has generated a culture of fear that is stronger than ever within almost every aspect of our society. While the film focuses on Cape Town South Africa, the issues it raises are applicable to the current social instability. Marking the fact that immigrants and refugees leave their homes because the alternative is much worse, the events depicted within the film illustrate human interactions that expose deep fissures within the already fractured communities.
