Using A Genetic Algorithm To Create Poetry

James F. Sorsen
Dr. John Seiffertt, Faculty Mentor

The goal of this project is to create a website where a user can create poetry collaboratively with an intelligent poetry generator. The program will function as an evolutionary algorithm that uses the user’s input to evaluate fitness. The focus of the generator will not be on creating poetry completely from scratch, instead the generator will utilize already existing poems as references and the user will have the option of pulling lines from freely available poetry on Project Gutenberg or using their own lines. The program will include a focus on word sounds, rhyme, and meter during the reproduction stage to help guide the process of creating new poems.
