Un Papillon Dans La Cité: A Translation by Kristen Womble

Kristen Womble
Dr. Timothy Farley, Faculty Mentor

This capstone project is a translation, from French to English, of Giselle Pineau's young adult novel Un Papillon Dans La Cité. This novel is about a young girl named Félicie who has been raised in poverty by her grandmother in Guadalupe. One day Félicie receives a letter from her mother, summoning her to come live with her in Paris. As Félicie tries to adapt to life in the suburban housing project where her mother lives, she desperately misses her grandmother and the life she had in Guadeloupe. Eventually, Félicie is able to convince one of her teachers to arrange for a school trip to Guadalupe. This project consists of an introductory text in French describing the cultural contexts of the novel, and the challenges these present to the translator. The translation itself, approximately 10,000 words or 30 pages, focuses on the first and last chapters of the novel.
