Religion in Romeo and Juliet
Hannah A. Bartee
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

How does Friar Laurence's position in the church affect his decisions, which directly affect critical plot points in Romeo and Juliet? Moreover, what does Friar Laurence's apparent Catholicism mean for Shakespeare, whose father was speculated to be sympathetic toward Catholicism? In addition, Shakespeare wrote in a time when Protestantism was dominant and Catholics were persecuted by Queen Elizabeth for their faith. This essay will attempt to analyze and explain the role religion plays for the characters and for the playwright himself.
