Jennifer K. Krug
Dr. Patrick Lecaque, Faculty Mentor

Louis XIV: a legend who began his reign of France at four years old, and grew to become one of France?s most infamous absolute monarchist. Someone who called himself the ?Sun King? shaped France into what it is today. He staffed the building of the iconic ?Louvre?, and distinguished the Palace of Versailles as a symbol of wealth, beauty, power, and monarchy. This paper analyzes Louis XIV?s means of coming to power in a different way not previously attempted. Louis XIV was a lover of the arts and beauty and intended to show off his appreciation to everyone. He held extravagant parties at his gold-plated palace that covered 2,014 acres of land. Through historical records and representation of nonfictional films, this paper will demonstrate the way Louis XIV was able to gain unbelievable control of France and its people through the art and extravagance of the Palace of Versailles.
