The Water Crisis in Africa: A Translation
Alex Williams
Prof. Faith Beane, Faculty Mentor

This translation focused on articles regarding the water crisis in Africa. In order to better grasp the environmental and political subject matter, I read French and English articles focusing on the water issue that were published by the United Nations, National Geographic and the World Bank. I used online sources primarily for dictionaries, general and specific to environmental literature, and thesauruses, while using my own dictionary, grammar guide and book of translation theory to aid along the way. The seemingly straightforward concept of translation is riddled with nuances requiring deep comprehension of both source and target languages, and the challenge and satisfaction lay both in figuring out the exact meaning of a word or phrase. My fascination with translation and environmental studies has culminated in this final undergraduate project, which I believe will open up future opportunities to study and work in these fields.
