Improving Image Quality in Algebraic Computed Tomography

The goal of this research is to improve algebraic algorithms for simulated medical CT-Scans in low signal strength, high noise situations. High doses of the x-ray radiation used to determine the density of tissue by CT-Scans are dangerous to the tissues of the body, potentially causing cancer to develop. However, lower signal strength inherently results in high levels of noise, which distorts image quality. One modification to the standard algorithm explored in this study includes strictly limiting the range of density values during calculation to logical values, eliminating values corresponding to negative densities. The other simultaneously solves for the density values obtained from two separate emitted x-rays, as opposed to solving for density values from one emitted x-ray at a time. The initial results of the study conclude that the implementation of both the two-ray and non-negative methods result in an decrease of image quality in the region of interest.
