John Mackey's Xerxes: A Conducting Analysis

John Mackey is a symphonic wind and orchestral composer whose distinct musical style involves the use of intricate rhythms and ostinato figures to create a driving force of sound in his pieces. This presentation provides insight into Mackey's compositional style and considers how to approach conducting Xerxes. Particular attention is given to an in depth analysis of the structure and harmonic content of the piece as well as Mackey's use of ostinato.
